should be tested for Tay-Sachs before they get married.

It is a really big deal.

And I didn't find out about it until I had been married twice and we were trying to have kids, but we never could. My sister didn't find out about it until she was married and pregnant, and she got tested, and sure enough...fortunately, there is no Ashkenazim ancestry on Olivier's side of the equation and he is clean. And I only found out about it because my mother told me my sister was a carrier. Which means she inherited it from our mother. Which means my mother is a carrier. Which means I could be, too. But it was pretty clear at that point that Bob and I were never going to have children and that it wouldn't matter in my case. There was pretty clear visual indication that Bob's mother's family had some African American blood that wasn't mentioned, and while I knew about my family's Jewish ancestry, I had not known about the Tay-Sachs until after it didn't matter anymore.

I don't know. Still. Haven't gotten tested. The only kids I will have will be by adoption, so it doesn't really matter. Still.

Living kidney donor needed; type B, O, or incompatible (with paired donation). Drop me a note (see profile).
