  •  There is no such (16+ / 0-)

thing as "victory" in Afghanistan.  What are the indicators that "victory" has been accomplished?  Crushing the Taliban?  Routing the already departed Al Qaida?

There are terrorist cells throughout the world, including in this country (aka crazy fundamentalists both Christian and non-Christian).  Do we wage war everywhere?

    •  And what benefit would victory bring to the US? (13+ / 0-)

Even if defined, a victory would have a negligible effect on our country's security, while taking a huge investment.

        This editorial reportage rings true.
The prosecution of the people and companies who savagely attacked and corrupted us and the countries they picked to humiliate is still the best means of extricating our troops and our leaders's intentions away from the brutal ugly theater of arrogant and avaricious racist cruelty, deceipt and destruction we yet still now ache to end.

the cork in the bottle to the wealth in nearby countries to the north and west. We will not allow another rival power to hold Afghanistan. We began our Afghan involvement in 1980 when the Soviet presence there was seen as a threat to the "free movement of oil" in the Persian Gulf Region.

and less on explicating the phony geopolitics of the ones who got us to punch this Tar Baby, and then hit it with the other fist, and then kick it with both feet.

            •  History is bunk -- isn't that (0+ / 0-)

what Henry Ford said, back in 1916?

"History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's dam is the history we made today."

I do spend a lot of time "reading history," and even "current events." Looks like your reading list and mine have very different titles on them. But hey, as I am sure you know, there is no truth or objective reality that can be identified as "the history of" anything, there is only power and relative levels of violence. And of course the bits of the great story that resonate with your particular vibes.

Humans are a dead-end species; keep doing your part to push us along faster. And keep reading your selections of the selective stuff you call "history." It's like grease on the axles of the Juggernaut. And keep up with the Risk! skills -- you're right in line with "the forces of history." Oops -- isn't that something out of Karl Marx?
