    sorry for the two comments but just realized -- why the bank charges a fee if we use our card as a debit card, but no fee if we use it as a credit card.

    If used as debit card, the customer pays a fee; if used as credit card, the retailer does. Coming and going. Either way, the money is taken directly from our bank account; no billing expense and no risk to the bank.

    Considering the small cost of electronic processing, it seems like a license to print money.
