    ironically, i had never thought about it quite in those terms, but that's exactly what is going on.  The worship of books and real estate.

      You might find Hector Avalos's Fighting Words interesting. Avalos, a religious studies professor, examines ways in which (supernaturalist) religion creates violence by inventing imaginary scarcities, which are then fought over. One of these scarcities is "sacred space"--more or less the same point C Barr is making about real estate. (Maybe the "former colleague" is Hector Avalos? I suppose that's unlikely.)

      I highly recommend Avalos' work, though the copy editing on Fighting Words leaves something to be desired.
