    One of the most critical decisions a researcher has to make is what are the possible variables that might effect the outcome of the experiment?

    You try to eliminate as many potential variables as possible, so you only come up with those few you are interested in examining.  One thing I don't like about tree rings is they are far too dependent upon local variables, and you really need a huge amount of trees in order to get a good average for any particular region.  And not just a good number of trees, but a good number of species.
