With Obama's Presidency, I feel the enduring pain of every teabagger, and believe me, I completely enjoy it.

a grassroots organization of gun owners and enthusiasts. And once upon a time, they more or less were that--I took the NRA Rifle Safety Course when I was a kid, the fee for the course covered my one-year membership as well. That's how a lot of people joined up, they take a course.
But in the last couple decades the NRA has morphed from a service-oriented gun owners' club into the extremely well-funded lobbying and electoral advocacy arm of the weapons and ammunition industry.

Not to put to fine a point on it, but one would have to look far and wide to find a more thoroughly amoral group of people than the folks who turn a profit off of TEC-9s and teflon ammunition.

Many rank and file NRA members are not aware of, or do not support many of the group's nuttier positions; nor do they really get where the NRA's principal funding comes from. I let my membership lapse when I found out--back in the 90s when Clinton signed the Brady Law. I am a gun hobbyist, and I have no problem with background-check or registration laws--hell, I welcome them. And i know for a fact that a lot of gun owners feel the same way i do.

An interesting sidebar: The NRA, which advocates nonstop for the "right" to concealed-carry, has a museum in the DC area, and they do not allow any guns, at all, ever, in their facility. So I guess they ain't all that stupid or crazy...

was pushing for the Assault Weapons Import Ban, the NRA raised only a pro-forma objection, since the domestic manufacturwers benefited. The other firearms rights groups, GOA and NCDRKBA, mmade considerable gains in membership at NRA's expense.
