  •  I knew a veteran of the Works Program (7+ / 0-)

a bright misfit Hubert Kidder who quit Berkeley in the thirties and went to work for the Corps, a guy from Maine. He told me that it absolutely saved him during the Depression.

when I knew him he used to take his daily walk in Moran State Park on Orcas Island in Washington, formerly owned by the WW 1 shipbuilder, Thomas Moran, once the richest man in Seattle. Moran donated his estate to the state.

Along came the Big D and the CCC made many improvements that you still see today, the big log picnic shelters, signs, trails, the stone tower on top of Mount Constitution. These were the works of true artisans. Hubert pointed them out to everyone with a great deal of pride.

    He's still talking change.
