  •  The high school dropout rate.... (4+ / 0-)

is rapidly approaching 50% and the main reason kids give for dropping out is....lack of interest.  Increasing numbers of our high school "graduates" are semi- to illiterate.  Colleges and universities are increasing their remedial course work to make up the slack so they don't flunk half of each freshman class.

A CCC type project, as you suggest, should follow the original model and include real instruction instead of the diluted, test-oriented rubbish that passes for public education across this country.

What can we do to push this through our paralyzed government and get these kids out there to gain some confidence, skills and knowledge, to say nothing about having pride in their work that they can bring back to their cities and do something worthwhile there instead of being another gangster.

... NO child left behind to all children left behind?  With so few prospects just now, the "why bother?" attitude is somewhat understandable.  All the more reason to have a program with job training, socially useful work and education as components.  That's what the original CCC was about.

Plus with the army running the camps, and the various discipline instilled, it made the US much more ready for WWII than it would have been otherwise...

That's what the terrible irony of Bush's "efforts" on behalf of his political imperative.  If I can choke it down and give him the benefit of the doubt, any good ideas or ideals he had were probably put the Karl Rove political sausage grinder.  Instead of prime rib, we got kielbasa.  Karl Rove and Lee Atwater will go down in history as two of the most destructive wankers ever to walk our streets.
