    what about buying up some blocks in Detroit, tearing down decrepit housing, and putting in some urban farms (continued employment feeding people from within city limits)?

    And, there is a pretty serious backlog of already scoped out projects in terms of maintenance / otherwise in national/state parks/forests, etc ...

      We could make "urban renewal" actually mean something besides tearing down homes and replacing them with expressways, which was the 60s/70s definition. There's certainly a lot that needs to be done in that direction in terms of esthetics, energy use, safety, health, economic development, tax base and lots of other reasons.

      But the context of the original CCC was forestry and forest-related (they also did a lot of fire-fighting) in the areas I'm familiar with, and a similar program can't be started instantly under current law. And there are forests that are in a condition analogous to urban decay and slums.
