  •  If you're a Democrat because you're a Christian (0+ / 0-)

    then if you become an atheist, you will become a Republican, right?

    Somehow I doubt it.

      "A therefore B" does not say "If B, must be A."

      "I am from Albany, therefore I live in New York State."

      •  Basic logic (0+ / 0-)

        You're right. I should have concluded, "if you become a Republican, you will have become an atheist."

        "If A then B" is logically equivalent to "If not-B then not-A."

        A = diarist is a Christian
        B = diarist is a Democrat
        not-A = diarist is an atheist
        not-B = diarist is a Republican

        I admit that not all non-Democrats are Republicans, but I think all atheists are by definition non-Christians.

    •  not a logical statement (5+ / 0-)

      some people are misinterpreting the poster as suggesting that Democrats must be Christian...I don't even think the poster is trying to claim that Christians must be Democrats, just that that's what makes sense to him based on his reading of scripture and Jesus Christ.
        Maybe it also makes sense that most atheists should be Democrats, although I have no idea why that would be except for the fact that lots of Republicans try to make their religion a part of their governing and don't like the 1st Amendment.

      otherwise, atheists will probably choose their party based on other factors or philosophies or senses of justice.  maybe unbridled survival of the fittest will lead them to be conservatives.

        on religious affiliation. It is absurd to conclude that atheists should be Democrats or Republicans, just as it is absurd (and more than a little theocratic) to assume that Christians should be Democrats or Republicans or whatever.

        Support for policy should be based on rational considerations. We are a secular republic, with freedom of religion but not a religious republic. Our laws, and our policies, are not and should not be based on religious beliefs.

        I find it more than a little disturbing when people say, in essence, the only reason they believe in civil rights, equality and freedom is because their god tells them so.

        If a new Dead Sea scrol is found and authenticated, in which Jesus says, "kill the gays", will Christian Democrats suddenly become homokillers?

        If not, then saying, "I'm a Democrat because I am a Christian" is not only exclusionary but more than a little alarming. "And", is fine - "because" is, to my understanding, utterly amoral.
