  •  I was in a Bible study in church where the (11+ / 0-)

subject of aid to the poor came up. The state legislature had just cut the welfare budget. I called them 'sodomites'. After the shocked reactions played themselves out, I read out loud the following verse:

Ezekiel 16:49 Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

I later stopped going to that bible study, we just saw things too differently.

The truth is I won't attend most churches. I found a church with 99% liberal Democrats. There is one Republican. He stood up one day in said "Boy its hard being a Republican in this church." However, he won't vote for Michele Bachmann (I'm in her district).

    •  Interesting. (0+ / 0-)

The term "Sodom and Gomorrah" is almost always used to refer to our so-called "permissive" society and how it clearly angers God, but few realize or recall that the actual sin of the Sodomites (according to the Bible), the sin for which they were punished by God, was what you've just described above.

if they go to one. But teachers sometimes encourage students to gloss over certain bits.

I was introduced to Ezekiel mostly in the context of the first chapters, for example, and we skipped the Song of Songs entirely (which is a real pity, it's a great read in any language - we would've studied the original). Some passages are... controversial.

Speaking of which, I wonder how that "Conservative Bible Project" is going to deal with these verses, or with pretty much anything attributed to Jesus...
