    "The Jungle" is another of those books that everybody has heard of but few have read. (I haven't either.) From what I hear, he intended to write a sob story about the hard lives of the poor and downtrodden - but what most people took from it was a scathing denunciation of the meat industry. (He is quoted as saying, "I aimed for the public's heart, and hit it in the stomach.")
