a fascinating state we live in, isn't it?  I live in the burbs, work in a lot of rural areas - in urban planning so I ask a lot of questions of the locals and try hard to really listen.

Most concerns I hear in rural areas are jobs-related, and even in very good economic times related to youth-brain-drain: the smartest kids finish college and go off to the city, because that's where the opportunity is.  So then it's "how do we get really good-paying jobs that will keep our talent at home?"

It's a valid question, since, sure there are plenty of bright young graduates who want the excitement of city life, but there are plenty who would be happy to go home too, if the opportunity was there.

Lately, though, it's more flatly "How do we keep jobs?" - a reflection of the tougher economic times.
