  •  My answer was sloppy there to but (0+ / 0-)

he already sort of knew where I stood...we were forced to talked about it more because of some relatives and baby-sitters who were ultra-christians who were appalled he wasn't baptized. One had told him if anything happened to him he couldn't get into heaven and would spend eternity in hell because of me.
I figured I'd let him wait and decide on baptism on his own when he was old enough to care. We had a very big talk at that time and I also responded to the person who said it with him at my side. Even though some religions teach that anyone who thinks God would send a child or non-Christian to hell just for that reason is worshiping a petty version of God and anyone who would tell a child they were bound for hell... well anyway.
That was a bigger conversation than God related to Santa but we actually had several over something he'd hear or come to wonder about. He knew different religions teach different things, he knew some of my beefs with the bible, that I didn't think people could know God for other people.

So with that as background I said something like I don't know if God is made up, might be something real there but that religion is made up. Also that it seemed like religion wasn't made up to make people happy but to scare them into being good in ways the church thinks is good.
It just sort of went it to conversations we'd had before but the made up Santa part seemed to help him really get how people could believe so much in what religions teach.
Generally my sense of God was if God existed 'he' was bigger than what we knew or thought of as God ...but feeling free to speak for God anyway...and would be about love and inclusion. That's a compressed description.
