gather a crowd, one has to give the people what they want and crave.

That puts everyone at the mercy of a crowd that may be very powerful but not very smart or noble.

I think the best line ever delivered in the history of movie making is from "Men In Black", where Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) says to Will Smith (skeptical human) after Smith had just encountered his first extraterrestrial:

Agent K: "Searching for a handle on the moment?"

Will Smith: "WHy don't you just tell people (that aliens are real) People can handle it, they're smart."

      A person is smart.

People are dumb, dangerous, panicky animals and you know it.

(and here's where I fall back on one of my favorite reasons to avoid religion...Agent K continues...)

"Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe...

...Five hundred years ago everybody knew the earth was flat

...and fifteen minutes ago you knew that humans were alone in the universe.

Imagine what you will know tomorrow"

One thing I've learned in the last ten years is that the population depends on smart and noble people to keep their lives tolerable; and yet we live in a country that celebrates what's popular sometimes to the exclusion of what is smart or noble or even demonstrably correct.

Democracy might guarantee us a very bumpy ride to the wrong place, because it does not guarantee that people will know what is really important to their lives, or that they will accept it if you explain it to them.

Just thought this was a convenient place to remind us all of that.

      Carry on...:)

George Orwell is banging on the lid of his coffin and screaming, "1984 was a cautionary tale, you dolts, not a motivational speech!"
