  •  I disagree with this statement (8+ / 0-)

Conservatives are content to put their feet down and preserve the status quo.

Conservatives (and their neo-conservative allies) are willing to alter systems where the outcome will increase private industry profits or military power.  Was it liberal ideology that led to the offshoring of millions and millions of good paying jobs in this country?

The current health debate is playing wonderfully.  Privately, they applaud the idea of having 30 million new captive customers for the insurance industry.  Publically, they know it's political suicide for whichever party tries to pass such a provision.  Enter the Democrats.  The GOP aren't having to lift a finger other than playing the role of obstructionist - Dems are doing the dirty work for them.   The GOP leadership knows this is a ticking time bomb for Dems.  I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two switch sides and vote for this health bill, just to spite the Democratic base.

    •  I had the same thought that a few (4+ / 0-)

mischief making Rethugs would vote for the bill.  John McCain's rousing support of Dr. Dean made me squirm.

The Rethugs have it both ways with this bill.  They can rant and rave against the obvious shortcomings while privately applauding the windfall influx of customers and revenue to their industry masters who they have dutifully served as obstructionists.

They didn't have to do a damned thing and still get their piece of the money pie.

    •  Maybe I should say that... (7+ / 0-)

Conservatives are content to let power stay in the hands that currently hold it, and live with the world those sources of power produce.

Really, when I started out, there was some meat in this post, but I got tangled up in my own metaphors and chopped away more than half of what I'd written. I'll revisit this some morning when I have it better fleshed out.

    •  Toggle on over to Red State and understand (0+ / 0-)

not one Republican is going to vote for health care reform.  They are diametrically opposed to it.  Because it disrupts the status quo.

    •  It's not just conservatives vs progressives. (0+ / 0-)

The conservatives are being played by the corporatists who get the conservative common people to vote against their own interests by scaring them with homos gonna get you tactics.  The corporatists wield the real power and they are not afraid of any change that will give them more money and power.  They have likewise infected some of the Dems.

I would love to see us morph into a truly Progressive Party, however the transition from going with the Dems would be many years of corporatist gains which I doubt the earth would survive.   It's just like that cartoon above where the step needed is really a miracle.
