    Thanks so much for your contributions to our society as a teacher. I'm sure your students are getting a good education about the challenges we face in being environmental stewards.

    I think the transition to electric vehicles could be pressed forward much faster. We could transition our passenger car fleet over the next fifteen years so that every car goes its first thirty miles on electricity. This would reduce carbon dioxide from that source by about 70%.

    All this is possible with current technology. But unfortunately, hybrids and electric cars now account for only about 2% of new car sales.

    In 2010 we are expecting a number of new hybrid and electric cars to hit the market so maybe we are approaching the tipping point. But I think government rules and incentives should be used to move us to the tipping point faster.
