    Dawes, like its successor, the IRA, was a direct assault on tribal cultural patterns and traditions. They were too priggish to keep trying to kill us off directly, so they went for cultural genocide and it damn near worked.

    Dawes will always be a dirty word in Indian Country. In the upper Midwest, it allowed the whites to cheat, lie and steal their way into owning the best unallotted land ... then they went after the allotments.  Their ancestors are alive today, some profiting from what their families did ... may they rot in a dark place.
