It goes through committees and things change. Senators want certain things enacted or stripped and it's a matter of cajoling and wooing and coaxing that eventually wins the day.

off the leash on most things.

This is one bill that it would have been worth playing hardball. Throwing the ktchen sink at the 5 or 6 recalcitrants. Supporting any opponent for re-election, cutting them out of any pork on any other bill, expulsion from the party, whatever.

On just one bill twisting arms like they are rarely twisted, and if necessary using the Nuclear Option to get something bold.

Do we honestly think that a great arm-twister couldn't have got 50/60 (plsu VP) to support Public Option with those sort of threats?

This wasn't impossible - the will wasn't there. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt by sugegsting failure of competance - it might have been an outright betrayal, but I thought I'd leave that theory for someone else.

Change legislation.  Economists would say the same on Financial Regulatory reform.  Immigration advocates on immigration...ad infinitum.

I just thought this was issue number one for most Democrats, indeed most Americans.

Excepting the emergency measures taken to counter the Recession, this seemed to be top of the legislative pile.

Maybe I've read that wrong - the other issues can wait 60 years, perhaps...

          Cheers for your comments.
