    In particular, they outgas styrene.  What do you think that smell is?   Styrene is a dilutant in the resin that provides the bridge to crosslink the ester groups as it evaporates.  Fiberglass boat manufacture VOCs in the US alone are estimated at 20,150 tons per year.

    There's a few new polyester resins that advertise no VOCs, mind you, that could be worth mentioning; I'm not sure how well their claims hold up to practice.
