    I used to make pomanders when I was a kid, and those were my presents.  You stick cloves in every inch of an orange, roll in alum, hang in a net bag for a month and voila, a lovely scented closet pomander.  Of course my parents were very frugal Depression-era people, so we didn't spend a lot period.

      Weren't they great?  What a nice smell, especially compared to all the chemical crap on the market today.  My mom always had lengths of brocaded ribbon that we'd tie around them to hang them.

        You know, I had to grow up to find out that other people didn't push the cloves in with their fingers. They poked the orange all over with an ice pick first.
        Man, would that have made it easier! I guess we had good callouses, though. ;-)
