  •  I used to work in a hospital (9+ / 0-)

and chose to work most holidays.  I was the only single person who did my job, and it just seemed fir to let people with families have the first choice to be off.  Sometimes, they'd choose to work for the extra $$, but mostly, they were happy to have the time with family.  I got off at 3 in the afternoon and would drive to my parents' for whatever celebration might be left by then.  That might not work for everyone, but it did for me.

I'm now a teacher who has 12 days off for winter break.  My second job is liturgical musician so, of those twelve days, I will spend at least a part of 8 of them working at church.  Again, if I spend time with my family, it will be after all the church stuff.  It's almost a guarantee that I will go to my sister's house and promptly fall asleep.  Playing for multiple church services from 4 p.m. Christmas Eve through 10:30 Christmas Day, including midnight Mass (at 11:00) on the 24th.

Hmmmm, I'm beginning to see a pattern here....  :-)

Whenever I encounter someone working on a holiday, I thank them for being there.  It just seems like the right thing to do.
