    I think the people advocating the ultimatum route have different family dynamics than some of us do. He is going to have to choose someday, whether with you or someone else, but not this year.

    I'm in Paul's role.  If it's any consolation, you have no idea what a deep impact your family has had. My husband's family accepted me without blinking (mind you, his whole family is a mess about different things, but I walked in with him, so I'm one of them [Long Island Italian/Irish mostly]). My parents, on the other hand, have been jerks to him for nearly two decades. Minor jerks, but still it makes me resentful that they're not better people (and makes me realize they've really always been this way). The rest of my family has been quite accepting (my sister especially--not having the sibling on board would have really sucked), but my parents are going to keep being estranged on this point for the rest of their lives.

    There's a reason I travel back there about once a decade.
