It is common practice in my school district (and many others) to send a student who is over the age of twelve to alternative school for a documented incident of bodily injury assault on another student. In addition, in my state, students over the age of twelve can be arrested and/or ticketed for said assault, and their parents can be held financially responsible for legal and medical costs associated with the incident.

Suing the school district?  Good luck.

    •  That one strike was an attempted murder. (4+ / 0-)

He choked the child until the child became unconscious. I tried to kill my Mother once when I was 12 by choking her to death. I know how much force and intention and time it takes to choke someone unconscious. NO one accidentally or unintentionally chokes someone unconscious. You are stupid or you suffer from ODD. Either way, you have my sympathy. Merry Christmas.

          •  or i say assumptions (0+ / 0-)

because we have one half of a story told by someone who wasn't there...

the facts could very well be accurate - i just try not to assume someone tried to kill someone else based on a third word account - that's all...

remember the saying - never assume - or else you'll make an ass out of u and me.

smaller class size (max of 7) school setting with a highly individualized curriculum.  Much of the learning is computer based with small group reading/ math programs.  Afternoons are usually a combination of vocational training/ community service scenarios (usually court ordered).  There are also dedicated counselors/ social workers for counseling and police safety and transporting students.  Workshops in life skills and social skills ...

1 strike and yes, they are out of the regular school community.  They don't get 2 strikes at another human being's body.  However, the student still recieves educational and a whole array of other types of services.  The goal is address whatever issues the youngster has without putting other children at risk.

band trips to Disney, and as a parent, I would not have been too pleased (to say the least) to have the fellow on the trip.  As a teacher, our school has a policy that if you get suspended, NO extra-curriculars for you.  If you can't exercise the self-discipline expected in a regular, daily, structured setting, then forget the less structured ones.

group as Brandon.  His father called the school and demanded that the boy not be anywhere near Brandon, which the vice principal assured would be the case, and then Brandon came home and told him that he had been forced to be in the same small group as his attacker.
