  •  I did the budget for such a family in NY (1+ / 0-)

    A high tax state.

I couldn't work the budget out.

There wasn't $7k left unless the family sold their modest house and moved into a $1200 apartment.

The net might be huge political pressure exerted on states with a good social welfare system. They will be forced to cut social services and education. The difference between what NY spends per pupil and Alabama is huge. There's a long way to fall for the social contract in NY state, which doesn't even address the inequity of additional medicaid burdens on different states.

    •  A family on $70K can't afford to own a house (1+ / 0-)

A $70K income means the family can afford the mortage of $150,000.  It is likely that a family on 70K probably cannot afford to own a home unless they could pay a huge down payment.

      •  Let's say such a house exists in Albany (1+ / 0-)

If a $250k house costs $8k in property tax in Amherst, then do the math and you get $4800 in property tax.

        Mortgage is $12,000.

        Utilities are $4,000.

Home insurance using the same 60% in the reduction from $250k to $150k is $1.2k

Without counting maintenance, the total for a $150k house is $22,000 a year on the $150k house, still a LOT higher than $10k.
