    I mean, it would be based on objective indicators: dress, ethnicity (actual or perceived), last names...

    It's also not like we don't profile.  We absolutely do.  We just aren't open about it.

      A couple of years ago, my sister and her husband and teenage kids visited friends in California.  They decided it would be fun to cross over into Tiajuana for a couple of hours to check out the Mexican side of the border and do some shopping.

      Four of them were travelling with US passports and my Yemenite Israeli brother-in-law was travelling with his Israeli passport.

      On the way back into the US, after a few hours of shopping, my brother-in-law was separated from his American wife and kids and was detained for questioning for HOURS. The border patrol officers had no interest in contacting any of his high-up connections in the US.  They just harrassed and harrassed him for hours, then finally let him go.
