    It's to check for patterns of response that are characteristic of terrorists and their accomplices.  There are specific patterns that are involved, and the probability is small that an innocent person will display those patterns (I know something about this but I'm not going to discuss details in public, sorry).

    For example even if you're not carrying a bomb, you could be a spy for some terrorist org, with a head full of guilty knowledge that will be detectable with a few questions.  

    Yes, it's annoying, and yes, to most Americans it seems intrusive as hell.  But if we were going through what Israel goes through all the time, we would probably tighten up to somewhere near that degree.

    The best way to deal with a situation like that is to put yourself in the Israelis' shoes and think of your participation as helping them deal with their constant state-of-siege situation.  And/or if you really object to getting put under a magnifying glass, don't go there.
