Shepherds are something from the past. Man wiped out big predators years ago almost everywhere and ever since we just put the sheep out in a field and check them every couple of days. That is really the only way you can make any money raising sheep. (not saying this is good just pointing out the reality of the situation)

That said the idea that a couple of wolves would kill so many sheep does sound more like fraud than reality. The other alternative is a pack of feral dogs but you don't get compensated for that so everyone just claims it is wolves.

were guarding sheep on huge tracts of land in Idaho and Colorado, out in the wilderness with a rifle, a dog, and a wagon for shelter.

I'm not sure if this is still the situation, but this was in the 70s and it was common practice.

Where thousands of acres of virtually free land and free pasturage on public lands are unknown, they still do it the old way.  Lower profits overall, but actually higher profit per animal and acre -- like intensive organic farming/horticulture as opposed to mechanical agriculture.  The only thing modern methods use efficiently is HUMAN labor.  Everything else, is wasted in spades.
