    Two words: Mitt. Romney.

Or any other candidate like him out there.  Just because the frothing at the mouth GOPers are the ones absorbing all the air in the room right now doesn't mean the GOP can't find some reasonably sane looking slick candidate to put forward in 2012.

Liberals drive me crazy. Unfortunately, conservatives are even worse.

      Three words: Fundies. Hate. Mormons.

Even for the cynical GOPers who'll vote fore him because he'd stand the best chance of toppling Obama (and he does), they know that he's way too much of a flip-flopper to be taken seriously by the wingnut base. All any opponent would have to do would be to drag up his 1994 race against Ted Kennedy.

And his religion will be something of an issue. He's no Jack Kennedy, and he didn't help himself with that religion speech two years ago.

      •  One word: Independents. With four syllables. (0+ / 0-)

Obama (and the Democrats) won over the independents.  That's how they won.  And these same independents are the ones souring on Congress and Obama, angry that they are out of work, that bankers are getting bailouts and a free pass, etc.

My folks are independents - your classic squeezed middle class, disaffected, pox on both their houses voters.  The only thing - the ONLY thing - positive they had to say about the folks in DC was that "well, at least looks like Obama is gonna fix healthcare".

They'll vote for us if we do something, or rather, several somethings.  They want progress.  Blow up HCR and you just blew up the 2010 elections.

        •  seems cynical (0+ / 0-)

for one thing, you can't go from "My folks feel this way," to "That's the demographic Obama is losing."  I don't think the polling really reflects that.  And it seems like you're missing the other side of it too.  Some people might not be as misty eyed about Obama once he's had to make hard choices and actually hold office for years.  But they still may vote for him when compared to the other options.  Will Mitt Romney really be able to convince your folks that he has a better idea for how to get stuff done?  I get that he's got a nifty haircut and everything but I think Obama is a pretty good campaigner and Mitt might get a bit chewed up in the process.

It's really silly to be picking this stuff apart at this point.  I just think the apparent pessimism on the left right now really isn't helping anything.  It's not even realistic and it helps the nutters with their narrative of resurgence.  They're a disaster.  They've got nothing new to offer but the stuff that ran the country into the ground.  Obama is still brilliant and he's working his butt off to try to fix their messes and not continue the same divisive politics of the Bush era at the same time.  Why don't we publicly give him some credit and focus our energy on painting those bozos in their true colors.

          •  I'm not pessimistic. (0+ / 0-)

I'm just pissed at the liberal tards and progressive idiots who want to kill HCR because they didn't get what their "public option" and free pony and are mad that the insurance companies are going to make money.

            •  Yep (0+ / 0-)

There's lots of folks acting like idiots ticking me off all the time.  Since I watched with a sinking belly as Ronald Reagan get elected.  There's always lots of people acting like 'tards.'  But it's worth asking what the best idea is to try to get something good done now.  "liberal tards and progressive idiots" probably isn't much of a coalition building slogan.
