    He apparently asked for U.S. help in finding his son, and said he was afraid his son had been radicalized.  I can easily imagine situations where a father and son aren't getting along, the son ceases contact with the father, and the father might make such a report where the son isn't a serious threat to anybody.

    Should the son have been talked to at the first opportunity?  Absolutely, and they were apparently going to do that immediately upon his arrival in the U.S.  But is it necessarily enough to undertake an immediate worldwide manhunt for the son?  I don't think the answer to that is as obvious a "yes" as others seem to think.
