          Liberal = favoring the protection of individual liberty.

          Progressive = favoring programs to advance social goals.

          They aren't incompatible, but they aren't synonymous either.

          But I disagree with The Navigator's claim that liberals and libertarians have much in common (except some surface issues). See my post above.
