Edwards deserved any abuse she dished out and shame on Halperin for portraying her this way. What he did to her was absolutely crazy-making and if she spent every moment on the campaign bus tossing shoes around and screaming, I would not blame her a bit.

Didn't she know about the affair?  If so, then isn't she kind of complicit in Edwards' desperate power grab?  If he got the nomination, McCain would have sailed into the WH (though probably without Palin.  Palin was picked because of Obama.)  If you ask me, they both bear responsibility for being willing to endanger the party's prospects for the sake of their selfish will to power.  Cancer or no cancer.

      •  I agree, but Halperin didn't call her calculating (2+ / 0-)

He portrayed her as an unhinged shrew:

        abusive, intrusive, paranoid, condescending, crazywoman

I admit that's a bit over the top.  But still, she's not this innocent cancer survivor that she's like us to think she is.  In fact, I was sickened when they used her cancer to announce that he was staying in the race.  I remember hearing they were going to make an announcement ... and that she had cancer ... and so I thought, ok, so I guess he's dropping out.  Wrong.  I remember watching the news conference and thinking to myself: "if you're not dropping out, then why is a private medical matter mine or anybody else's business?"  And then he made that off-color remark that he "beat" her sometimes.  I'm sorry, but those two are weird to say the least.

tidbit.  The day John first learned of Elizabeth's first cancer diagnosis was the day Kerry conceded.  The next day John began assembling his campaign staff for the '08 run.  ugh.

          •  Oh, for sure. I was never an Edwards supporter (4+ / 0-)

and always found him oily and smarmy. My best friend has lived in Raleigh for a long time and met him numerous times at social gatherings, so I knew he was never what he portrayed himself to be.

I did have a lot of respect and time for Elizabeth, so I was disappointed that she enabled this behavior and nearly put us all in a terrible position. I just hate that Halperin's going after her for her perfectly justifiable angry, hurt and confused reaction instead of what you are talking about.

I don't think we disagree at all, in other words :).
