but I do think he underestimates the extent to which the situation in the Senate is mirrored in the larger society. It is not only our government that is held hostage by the most hateful, reactionary elements of our society. Sure, you can dream big in this country, but the sad fact is that all dreams are predestined to be shot down by some racist evangelical who believes science=Satan, and that ignorance equals godliness.

We are rapidly approaching the point where it is safer not to bother trying anymore than to beat one's head against a brick wall of futility.

Deoliver47 was right and deserves some apologies.

give up. You have a posterity to respect. When you are dead and gone you want people who have only seen pictures of you to repeat their daddies epitaph "He fought the good fight." Those evangelicals are in the minority and in the wrong. An early commandant of the Texas Rangers is remembered for telling his men "A little man will take a big man every time if he's in the right and keeps on comin'".

"If I pay a man enough money to buy my car, he'll buy my car." Henry Ford

As the Confederate officer supposedly said...

OF COURSE it's safer not to try anymore.  I mean, DUH!

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!
