One of the reasons progressives have become increasingly vocal with our displeasure over politics of late is the seeming ease in which candidates promise and campaign on progressive issues, but the moment elected quickly tack towards the center.

As a candidate running for office, what can you tell me that will ease my mind about sending your money or assisting in canvassing?

That's a great question and I wish I had a great answer.  Unfortunately, too many elected officials are more concerned with their own interests and keeping their party in power.  Like you said, they promise you one thing on the campaign trail and do something else when the get elected.

All I can say is, that's not me.  Its not the way I was raised and its not the way I'm raising my children.  Words like character, honor and respect were once used to describe the traits of our elected officials.  People looked to them as role models for not only for themselves, but their children.

      Not today.

      Not anymore.

I've never dreamed of being in Congress or being a role model.  I have worked hard to be a good Dad and teach my kids that when you say you're going to do something, you do it.  So I'm going to be damn sure that no matter what, my kids will still look up to their dad.   If I can do that, then I'll be able to look you in the eye and say I did what I promised.

back to this diary. I am in VA-10 and a life long resident of it (since I was brought home from Washington Hosp Center in August of 1964. My husband and I bought the house my parents bought 2 months before I was born (which was incidentally the same day they opened the first leg of the US Beltway- August 17, 1964) so we are both residents of your district. And I know the heart and soul of the people living in the Haycock Precinct number 307 as I have been a Democratic volunteer every year since I was eligible to vote in 1982.

So if I may offer a bit of early advice for your campaign. Please don't disparage the CIA or the FBI with comments like

This is a guy whose best idea for solving the unemployment crisis was to vote against the economic recovery package and then hold a job fair at which many of the employers were federal agencies like the CIA and FBI.

even if you don't mean to disparage either agency, it will be taken as such. Your district is loaded with employees of both Agencies and quite a few of them are Democrats.

How do I know this? Well, I am Daily Kos's only self-outed Company wife and my husband is a 25 year Blue Badger for the CIA. He is also a die hard Democrat.  We may or may not have (as is required by the agency to preface the following) 5 homes on our block of 13 that have employees belonging to both agencies.  And our block has only 1 Republican out of 27 voters so I am begging of you not to say anything about the FBI or CIA being a favorite of the Republicans. There are a lot of people who work for the CIA who are registered Dems in your district and I'd hate to see you turn them off with that kind of mistep. They bust their asses trying to right that ship always sailing in the direction of legal and budgetary hell. And turning them off will not give votes to your opponent but could cost you votes as they simply won't bother to show up especially since there are no Senatorial elections in Virginia this year. Please drop any partisan references to the CIA or FBI from your Campaign speeches or literature.

I worked my ass off for Judy Feder in 2006 and 2008 and I will likely do the same for you. I am also tired of seeing our district go to Wolf and the only reason he is consistently reelected is his accessibility to his constituents who, especially on the westerly side of this district, are very politically tuned into FOX news and the Republican Dogma. You have got to win over the hearts of the people here on the eastern side of the district and many work in the various intel agencies so please do not turn them off or tune them out.
