    The poles will always be colder than the lower latitudes, because of the obliquity of the insolation (and, hence, the same solar energy is spread out over a larger area the more you approach the poles).

    Because the planet is tilted, the pole pointing away from the sun in a given season will be extra cold, because it receives no insolation for half the year.

    So the poles, and the winter pole especially, will always be fucking cold.

    Cold winters elsewhere are partially caused by the locally reduced insolation, true. But winter storms are caused because fucking cold airmasses from the winter pole are transported to lower latitudes when a low pressure front forms there and pulls the cold air in. Making low pressure fronts to move gigantic air masses takes free energy. Dump more free energy into low latitudes, there's more opportunity to drag that cold air from the poles.

    So even as average temperatures rise, the poles are still very cold, especially in winter, and we'll be seeing more visits from the air there now.
