      you said the sagan quote was heresy to traditional scientists and I don't see what in the quote is that controversial.  

      I was just trying to understand what you saw controversial about that quote.  It can't just be that it's a non-reductionist approach as many scientists favor models of systems and would rather not be holed into a niche.

        from someone who won't use more than a single sentence in comments, and who doesn't seem to be aware that "reductionist science" is one of those over-worked and under-thought terms used in widely divergent ways by syncretic scientists, new age pseudo-scientists, and intelligent design freaks.

        I gather that the terms "heresy" and "radical" as used here amount to "a new approach I haven't stumbled on before in my reading of popular science".
