  •  We had a mini-economic boom when Civil Unions (6+ / 0-)

first passed in VT. About 90% of the couples, IIRC, came from out of state. Local wedding planners, florists, B&Bs--they were in heaven!

I think the fact that CUs turned out to be so NOT scary, and in fact, good for the economy, made passing full marriage rights not such a big deal last year. In fact, the last few deciding votes came from some Rs and some D's in heavily Catholic districts.

    •  Similar stories in SF in 2004. (6+ / 0-)

The whole city was rolling in dough -- restaurants, hotels, caterers, florists, jewelers.  It was just a great time to live here and feel the palpable joy of the whole area.

window of opportunity on a biz trip and my SigO flew in to join me for the weekend after my work obligations ended.  I'd been in SFO many times and was excited to show him the city.  We passed by City Hall on the way from one shameless tourist spot to another and saw the lines outside the building.  Goosebumps, arm hairs standing on end.  Witnessing history, although neither of us were big same-sex marriage advocates at the time.  That weekend was a turning point for us, and we've been much more involved in the effort since then.

Fingers crossed (our version of prayers) that the Olsen/Boies effort will be successful.
