    The 'true believers' (Tea Partier, in this case), will simply accept this as what he has to do to get elected. Openly distancing himself from them will be seen as a smart ploy by the believers. Now, if he had been caught on tape making fun or them, or acknowledging that he's just using them and that he thinks they're all idiots, THAT would cause him problems with the true believers.

    For the rest of the voters, this won't hurt him, either. He will be seen as hypocritical and dishonest, to the degree that anyone is paying attention. A large percentage of those who even notice will view this simply as politics as usual and vote D or R as though this had never happened. I'd guess that the number of Rs who will be turned off by this one example of hypocrisy is vanishingly small.
