  •  Haiti became part of the United States when? (8+ / 0-)

Don't get me wrong, I want the United States to coordinate the best possible relief effort into Haiti and help save as many lives as possible. But part of what was shocking about Katrina and our government's inept response to it was that it was reminiscent of the kind of responses to disasters we see in countries with little infrastructure like Haiti. It solidified the growing impression that the United States was becoming a third world nation with a huge gap between haves and have-nots.

Add to that the fact that the Bush administration was slow to even acknowledge the disaster, saying initially that New Orleans had dodged a bullet, and it solidified a growing sense that our government had simply stopped working, and those running things only cared about the interests of an elite few.

The Obama administration has been on top of the Haiti situation as well as can be expected from the start. Relief efforts will be very difficult because of the nation's poor infrastructure, but that can hardly be blamed on Obama.

Fineman is so typical of insider Washington pundits who love to create these absurd false equivalences.
