...but I'll add this.  Another key and critical difference between Haiti and Katrina is that in Katrina, we had control of the infrastructure that should have protected New Orleans as well as ample warning to begin strengthening/repairing that infrastructure.  The failure was egregious with respect to Katrina not just because of the aftermath - but also because it was preventable.

Obama (or America) couldn't control Haiti's infrastructure and its earthquake-readiness.

I would also pick a few small nits with you while agreeing overall with the diary.

I believe American knew that it was in deep economic shit prior to the election and I believe absolutely that Obama was elected to address it.  I believe further that moderates ran screaming from McCain not only because of Palin, but also because of his utter lack of comprehension about the financial crisis.  Remember "The fundamentals of our economy are strong"?

We all knew Afghanistan was fucked prior to the 2008 election and part of the reason we knew it was because Obama and others told us so.  He knew absolutely - to a level of detail we'll never get to see - that Afghanistan was in deep trouble from the briefings he received during the campaign.

      Rena, you nailed it.

Obama in Haiti is a mission of mercy, not a presidential duty.

And Obama will outperform Bush, even though NOLA is IN the USA and Haiti is not.

and the comments attached to it.  Lots of back-and-forth going on there now that this had made the rec list.  A lot of people were pointing out that even it is a crappy comparison, it will still be made and to accept that fact.

And sadly, I thought - the majority of Americans won't give a shit because Haiti is not in America.  So the good news comes shrouded in depressing news - no, he won't be judged overmuch on the response to Haiti.  But the reason why is because average American's don't care what happens outside of their immediate proximity.

        If that's our new standard..
