  •  Excellent summary of the case against Taylor (10+ / 0-)

as well as the despicable relationship between Taylor and Robertson.  Also, you should be aware that the crimes Taylor is charged with are only those committed in Sierra Leone, because the geopgraphical jurisdiction of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (the court trying him in The Hague) is limited to SL.  Taylor is quite possibly culpable for other crimes committed within Liberia, if a copmpetant court were to be convened.

    •  Good point (4+ / 0-)

I am not sure why Taylor has not been charged for crimes in Liberia.  Two possible explanations are that they are still investigating his actions there and also because such charges might destabilize the country which is still struggling to recover from his devastating tenure. I am sure that there are other explanations as well.

      •  Well, as I said, the SCSL (3+ / 0-)

had not jurisdiction for those crimes.  There have been calls for an International Tribunal for Liberia (including by the former SCSL Prosecutor, David Crane) which would have jurisdiction.  But, the politics of doing so is what has revented that from moving forward, imho.

Should Taylor be found guilty, that idea will probably remain stillborn, since he would probably end up in prison for the rest of his life.  Should he be found innocent, however...
