    Or, would you behave like all the gun owners we know, carefully avoiding situations in which a gun might be needed?

    The fact is, I carefully avoid those situations now.  I cannot conceive of how carrying a gun would make me more cautious.  There is a lot to be said for the self-confidence a gun may give some people, not unlike the demeanor of a black-belt martial arts master who eschews confrontation; but knowing you can handle yourself in a violent situation does not IMO make you less likely to find yourself in that situation than someone who cannot.  

    I know I can't fight or shoot my way out of most problems; and my pacifism and demeanor have kept me out of trouble as well as armament.  In my entire adult life, I've never had so much as a fistfight with another human.

      I am now a completely non-confrontational person. For example, I completely gave up even the slightest display of "road rage." Nobody has seen my extended middle finger since 2004, regardless of how bad a driver they are... because there is a tiny chance that it might provoke them to violence.
