    In the 1970s, I drove a cab in Chicago. More cabbies were killed than any other job in Chicago.  

    I know some of the drivers carried a gun; I never did.

    Finally, I had a passenger pull a gun and point it at the back of my head. He asked for the keys to the cab and my money -- I gave him both.

    He got out of the cab and walked away.  If I had had a gun, I could have shot him.  I ask myself what that would have accomplished.

    And, for those who advocate arming everyone, I wonder what would have happened if this guy assumed every cabbie had a gun.  Would I be able to post this today?

    I now teach at a university and am appalled that people want those with conceal and carry permits to bring their guns to classes.  

    I have no problem with a person having a gun for hunting.  I have no problem with a person being allowed to have a gun to protect themselves in their home.

    I'm tired that we need more guns to make us safe.  If guns really make people safe, Somalia should be heaven on earth.  

    There are times in politics when you must be on the right side and lose.
