    •  Sometimes I wonder about Independants. Do they (0+ / 0-)

really have that short of an attention span?

Maybe they'll get distracted by some shiny object and forget to go to the polls.

      I

      •  I don't know who said this... (0+ / 0-)

it might've been Bill Maher, but someone had said that Independents were pretty stupid.

I considered myself Independent, but at least I'm aware of what's going on.

        •  You're right. I know there are many very (0+ / 0-)

smart Indies, so you are definitely excluded from my broad categorization.  But it does seem like a lot of Independents go whatever way the political wind happens to be blowing at any given time and that's a big problem.

Many Independents, ironically, are not exactly independent thinkers.

          •  Easy to speak ill of independents... (0+ / 0-)

but the truth is that voters are not owned by the parties.

When parties -- and, more to the point, the people they help to elect, take voters for granted, the country gets screwed and health care reform becomes welfare for the medical industry.

Free speech? Yeah, I've heard of that. Have you?

    •  Many Indies used to be Republicans (0+ / 0-)

The past few years, many disillusioned Republicans switched to Independent status.  It could affect polling results.  The sample may have a disproportionately high percent of those Independents plus true Independents that are dissatisfied with Washington DC, probably best indicated by those who voted for Obama.

I believe 38% of MA voted for McCain, which would have been mostly a combination of Republicans and Indies since Republican registration is only about 12% if I remember correctly.  The poll may be drawing a high percentage of these voters.
