I dont think the bump is completely due to the SOTU and the republican remedial lesson on govt.  I think its also because he's finally acting like a populist dem again, and not a pussyfooting, concession giving, crawling over glass shards for bipartisanship noob to Washington.

If he keeps it up he gets re-elected (and more importantly, the midterms arent a bloodbath).  If he goes back to old Obama, he doesnt.  I think he gets that now. Maybe...  Have to watch still.  His advisors are terrible, so I imagine he gets bad advice (not that having terrible advisors isn't his own damn fault).
You can be sure that  Rahm's instinct is to sell out, cheaply, and screw the base whenever its needed.

His bank/fiscal policy looks like maybe its turning around (stress on the maybe).  He's pretty late on DADT, and halfhearted about it, (he always has been, he was never much in gays' corner) and health care is likely just done.  It sure smells of Fail.  So he's still playing catchup at this point, but he can do it if he makes an effort to do the right things.  I'm mildly hopeful, which is a lot better than I have been in months.

the final paragraph of my diary:

Obama's new populist message and tougher talk of the past two weeks is having an obvious positive effect on the public's perception of him. But even more importantly, I believe it's his more uncompromising stance with Republicans that is having the greatest effect.
