  •  I carry one every day (8+ / 0-)

I'm about to strap on my Glock 29 and head out into the world.

Like every day, my goal is to keep it holstered. I avoid any kind of confrontation, no matter how minor. I carefully stay out of dangerous situations: where I once would have feared getting hurt, now I fear hurting someone else even more.

I was taught the safety rules as a little kid. My father added a twist: he taught me to open the action on every gun when I first pick it up, no matter what anyone says about its condition. He said, "Never believe the words 'it's not loaded.'" Five minutes after he told me that, he handed me his .22 rifle and said "It's okay: it's not loaded."
He waited about three seconds, and gently swatted me on the back of my head.
    "What was that for?"
"You believed me when I said it's not loaded."

Now, every time I pick up a gun, I remember that gentle swat, and open the action to see for myself whether it's loaded.
