    we failed to organize them, so the republican party and religious right were happy to do it.  all there answers essentially get at the same thing: obama, dems and liberal views are not legitimate.  they flipped a cognitive switch a long time ago that allowed them to understand the world around them only by refusing to recognize the legitimacy of dems or opposing views.  

    I think there are two approaches: recognize that conservatives are a competing tribe, politics is zero sum and therefore all our efforts should be directed towards defeating them.  Or you try to appeal to them, organize them or win them over.  Obama is clearly trying the latter (although progressives are right that its not working and probably isn't capable of working).

    But what's the alternative?  our political institutions are designed for compromise and consensus- without those, our institutions grind to a halt and nothing gets done.  

    In order to govern, Obama has no choice but to work with elites and corporations since one political party and its base views him as illegitimate.
