I've been reading Asimov's Foundation series, and it's about a fictional (so far) field called psychohistory, which "combines history, sociology, and mathematical statistics to make (nearly) exact predictions of the collective actions of very large groups of people" and "depends on the idea that, while one cannot foresee the actions of a particular individual, the laws of statistics as applied to large groups of people could predict the general flow of future events."

The founder, Seldon, is very good at getting in trouble for pointing out the obvious things that the Emperor and other leaders of the galactic empire refuse to see, based on these trends, that the empire is crumbling and will be in ruins in a few centuries.

This is like that, only it's real, and the Democratic party's failure is only 1-2 years away.

    •  maybe i need to read it myself, as i am (0+ / 0-)

very interested in studying how group behaviour in online forums such as this do/do not, can/can not, influence outcomes?

Using this one as a template I have not yet seen any proof that they do actually have any real influence on elections, which was originally the purported purpose of the existence of the blog. Today. I have no idea what its purpose is, other than to grow and attract traffic.

It has no CORE philoopshy as far as I can see any more.
