  •  I'm no fan of fiorina, but... (0+ / 0-)

...she was correct that her biggest mistake was not getting rid of more bodies at HP sooner...

HP is one of the most bloated bureacracies in American business, and most of the company is living off ink profits.  There are thousands of employees there that are Retired In Position (RIP) and do not add value.  The HP Way was what kept her from cleaning house sooner than she did.

Her douchebaggery does know no bounds, however; she crossed a line when she redecorated the boardroom with pictures of herself replacing those of the HP founders.

    •  True in principle, but screwed up in execution. (3+ / 0-)

It makes sense from a business perspective to fire people that have ceased to provide any productivity and are only a drain on the company.

But HP is an R&D company, and R&D projects rarely provide any concrete evidence of productivity until years later.  For example, the inkjet business that became their cash cow was a good decade in the making.

In apparent ignorance of this high-tech business model, Fiorina decided to cut R&D projects that were not imminently profitable.  HP is quite fortunate that she only ended up in charge long after the inkjet printer was brought to market.

It's all fine and dandy to abandon dead wood, if the person in charge can distinguish dead wood from a sunken treasure chest.

      •  Point taken, but... (0+ / 0-)

...the dead-wood is fairly noticeable (e.g., Corvallis is overrun with it).

HP R&D is just not that big a part of the overall organization; while it may have taken an unjustified hit in layoffs, there are still plenty of areas that need to be cut loose.
