  •  He would have crushed her. (0+ / 0-)

If Capuano wasn't such a hothead, he would have beaten her as well.

Markey is clearly more qualified than Coakley, and he would have gotten down into the trenches.  He has proven that he can fight, and has been successful many times over the years.  Plus, he would not have taken any of the voters for granted.

Markey is also an "establishment" dem here in Massachusetts.  Given the option of Markey vs Coakley, one could argue that he has campaigned more successfully over the years, and people would not have seen him as a risk, which is why they turned away from Capuano.  Markey would have been an easy vote, with virtually no negatives.  The Dems may very well have turned out for him instead of her in the primary.

Coakley won the nomination because she was the lesser of the evils.  Markey would never have been viewed that way.

The machine would have lined up behind him.  And "Senator Brown" would never even have been a consideration.

And historically, the female candidate is very risky in Ma.  She is someone who would need to be so much better than the competition.  That is why I recommended Elizabeth Warren.

And Coakley with the Fells Acre case had serious "issues" with favorability - on both sides of the aisle.  She was a terrible choice from the beginning.

    •  Of course (0+ / 0-)

Markey is more qualified.  So is Capuano.  But she beat him by 20 points.  I voted for Capuano, but I knew he wasn't going to win.

In a 4 way special election primary, she was the only female candidate, and there was a groundswell among the democratic establishment to see Massachusetts elect its first female senator.

To top it off, she was the only candidate with  statewide name recognition, plus she had a solid fundraising base, and had overall positive ratings.

The machine would not have lined up behind Markey. They chose Coakley early on; it was a poor choice.

I completely agree with you on Warren, she would be fantastic.

      •  Capuano never had a chance because (0+ / 0-)

        he is a hothead.

If Markey ran, she never would have.  He would have destroyed her.
